When devising IP strategy, for all the consideration given to markets, competitors, suppliers and so on, one thing always seems to be the deciding factor: cost. Although most economies are already two years removed from the global economic crisis, corporate budgets have yet to fully recover. So to assist IP managers effectively shape their IP strategy, let's look at Patent Office fees in both Taiwan and Europe. |

Single EU Patent Plan Gets Committee Go-ahead |
Plans to use the enhanced co-operation procedure to create a unitary patent system in the EU, as requested by 12 Member States last year in December 2010, were approved by the Legal Affairs Committee on 27 January. If the enhanced cooperation is authorized by both the EU Parliament and the Council, the Commission will present two proposals: one on the language regime (consultation procedure) and the other establishing the single patent (co-decision procedure). The request by 12 Member States (DK, EE, FI, FR, DE, LT, LU, NL, PL, SL, SE and the UK), to start an enhanced cooperation procedure came in after the Member States concluded that no EU-wide agreement on the issue could be found within the Council. Other Member States may join the enhanced cooperation at any time. |

Are Patents Evil? An Economist's Perspective |
By Bravo Li, NAIP Editorial |
As rational members of a capitalist society, we are, for the most part, trained to see monopolies as bad for the market. Monopolies create artificially high prices. They stifle competition. They eat children's candy and other evil acts. We also know, as IP industry professionals, that patents are essentially monopolies granted by the government. Therefore, through specious reasoning, patents are evil. Right? |
