Procedures & Information for those affected by the Tohoku District Earthquake

To support patent filers and organizations following the March 11th earthquake off the eastern coast of Japan, the JPO has created a webpage listing various handling procedures and information. For those were or are currently unable to file patent applications, the JPO has released an electronic form, and is also accepting written statements with the applications through post. Other procedures, such as requests for corrections or return of fees, must completed within 14 days from the time it becomes possible. Note, however, that this time allowance is limited to 6 months after lapse of the standard deadline for the relevant procedure. Further details and regular updates can be found here.

New Discriminative Charging Policy for Taiwan Accelerated Examination
Beginning July 1st, 2011, TIPO's Accelerated Examination Program (AEP), which aims to reduce time to grant for Taiwan invention patent applications, will implement discriminatory charging. No charge is levied if the application's foreign counterpart application has been granted by a foreign patent authority, or if the patent authority in Europe, Japan or the United States has issued an examination notice or search report. However, an NTD 4,000 charge will be levied if the sole reason is that expedited examination is necessary for commercial practice. Furthermore, under these conditions, an applicant may abuse the program to test patentability of an application. As a result, TIPO now requires the applicant file for early disclosure (incurring an NTD 1,000 fee) if the application has not already been disclosed. Further details can be found here (Chinese).
