NAIP Teams with Kim & Chang for Korean Patent Industry Seminar |
|
 |
On April 17 2007, NAIP held a "Korean Patent Industry" Seminar at the Leader Hotel Conference Hall. For the seminar, NAIP invited Patent Attorneys Kim Seon-Woon and Suh Tae-Jun of Korea's largest legal firm Kim & Chang to speak on patent application and litigation in Korea. |
NAIP General Manager Winston Hsu remarked in his opening address that Taiwanese corporations often focus solely on acquiring US and Chinese patents, while disregarding markets in other countries. However, Korean corporations, often the major competitors of Taiwanese businesses, favor globally-balanced patent portfolios and brand-building. To help understand the Korean approach, Mr. Kim and Mr. Suh have come to introduce the Korean Patent application system and infringement procedures. |

According to Mr. Kim, Korea is currently Taiwan's fifth largest trading partner with an estimated value of 22.3 billion US dollars in 2006. In addition, for many high tech industries such as Opto-electronics, semiconductors, telecommunications and more, Taiwanese and Korean companies work jointly. Therefore, should an IP-related conflict occur, a Korean patent would be invaluable to the Taiwanese company.
Statistics in 2005 show that Taiwanese companies applied for only 517 patents, a far cry from the 16,468 and 10,507 applications submitted for Japan and the US, respectively.

For patent litigation and defense, Mr. Suh spoke in great detail about Korea's legal system, suggested actions for lawsuits, injunction relief, methods for collecting evidence, defense strategies and so on. Mr. Suh also prepared a list of 10 important lessons for effective patent management, the first of which is to always be fully aware of the national and international patent trends related to your products.
